Image
Today's guest post comes to us from The Other Karen who lives in San Diego and is one of the regulars who plugs in at INFO each year. If you like this post, she has a blog called What Is The Rainbow Gathering . Visit it for more great information. Enjoy!  The First-Timer’s Practical Guide to the Rainbow Gathering What is the Rainbow Gathering?                                 The Rainbow Gathering is an annual free event that happens every summer on and around the week of the 4 th of July on public land in a different National Forest, in the United States of America. Rap 420 - Know your rights

Image
RAP 420 The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons and things to be seized . (The Fourth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America)  This rap sheet has been prepared to help you stay out of jail. In the past, Rainbow gatherings have been the target of police harassment, often illegal. Many gatherers who have been arrested could have avoided jail time and expensive court dates if they had known a few of their basic rights. This rap sheet is a tool. Read it and understand it, and YOU will have the upper hand in the situation. Roadblocks, DUI checkpoints, etc. When heading toward a gathering, always assume you will run into a roadblock on the way in. It is very important to know your rights before r...

On peeing in the woods

Image
A message primarily for my family at the Rainbow Gathering who do not have a penis. If you're drinking enough water to stay hydrated, you're probably peeing a lot. Now when you pee, hopefully you'll be peeing behind a tree or a bush or somewhere in the woods (Not the shitter). If you're like me, you like to wipe after you pee. But then you have some slightly used toilet paper to dispose of - and NOT by burying it under two inches of duff. Some one will have to pick up that toilet tissue - let that someone be you. I've taken to bringing extra wash clothes or bandanas to the gathering. I keep one in my day pack at all times. Then when I need to pee, I wipe with a washcloth or bandana. I put it in a plastic bag in my pack. The next day I grab a new one. The old one gets rinsed out and left to dry for a day or two. 4 or 5 wash clothes or bandanas will last me 3 weeks using this method. The other option is to carry all that used TP to the nearest shitter a...

Spring Circle / Council / Counsel

Image
Spring council/counsel/circle (Spring CCC)  Updated June 19th at 9:10 PM Central Time. Spring CCC is over. Consensus minus one was reached for a site in Missouri. The Howdy Folks is now available.  Updated June 18th at 11 AM Central Time.  Please be patient as the folks at spring council try to find a gathering site. They have been dealing with very dangerous storm conditions in addition to challenges finding a site on and off over a number of days. Trying to balance water, parking, and the concerns of indigenous communities is not easy.  Folks are revisiting sites to see what can be made to work with some Rainbow ingenuity.  If you are in the area, stop by the council site and find out how you can help. Maybe folks need some more green energy, maybe they need their laundry done, maybe some hot pizza would lift spirits.    Updated June 17th @ 3:15 PM Central Time The council is ongoing.   Folks on the land trying to find the best possi...

Consent - Rap 121

Image
Rap 121   This is a gathering based on love and respect. Please help create a safe space for everyone. Respect each other and do no harm.  Ask before hugging or touching anyone. Nudity is natural, and not a sexual invitation. “No” means NO!   The absence of “Yes” means NO! A sleeping or intoxicated person cannot consent.  A person under the legal age of consent cannot consent.   A person unable to competently consent for any reason cannot consent. Consent at one time does not imply consent at any other time.  Consent for one action does not imply consent for any other action. Consent given can be revoked at any time. Respect yourself and trust your instincts. If you don’t feel comfortable being intimate or alone with someone, or with what someone wants you to do, you have the right to say “no”. If planning on engaging in sexual activity, open and forthright sharing about sexually transmitted infections is necessary.  Love happens – pro...

Pup 107

Image
Pup 107 Our dog friends are part of our family, and we love them. Bringing a dog to a gathering carries both special joy and extra responsibility. In many ways, dogs are like small children, and need as much attention and care as children do. If you are able to leave them at home, your gathering will be more spontaneous and worry-free, and your dogs will be much safer. If you do decide to bring them, attach waterproof I.D. tags to their collars with their names, your name, where you are camped, and your home phone number so you can be reunited if you become separated. Be sure they are current on all their vaccinations because there will be many dogs there, and contagious illness spreads quickly. Be sensitive to your dogs' physical and emotional needs. Offer them food and water often. Make sure shade is available. Even though you are busy, don't forget to give them attention throughout the day. Be patient with them. They're in an unfamiliar environment, ...

Gathering with Kidz by Info Karen (Guest Post)

Image
My good friend, Info Karen, put together today's guest blog post -- not to confuse anyone but there are two of us living in San Diego. Karen with an "E" and me - Karin with an "I". Since Info Karen has kids, she graciously agreed to put together today's guest post for those of you coming home with kids. If this helped you, please stop by Info when you're at the gathering and thank her. Bringing babies and small children to the Rainbow Gathering can be quite a chore, but it is also very rewarding, and a wonderful growth experience for them. But deep woods camping with your kids can be quite a challenge. Being a Rainbow Mom myself, I was asked, a few years back to pass along some helpful advice for folks who are bringing their kids for the very first time. The following article sprang from those requests. I wrote it when my eldest was 6 and my twin boys were three and potty-training. I’ve been to the annual Gathering with my first when he ...

Rainbeau Weaver's Heartsong on the Gathering

Image
Today's guest post comes from Rainbeau Weaver Attending my first gathering in the 80s changed my life forever & helped me find my purpose, my people, my family.   When we drove up to the front gate that first day, a beautiful woman gently walked up as my very young children & I exited the van.   Offering a wide hug she exclaimed joyfully, “Welcome Home!” I looked around as several smiling, friendly, dusty, colorful hippies rushed up to help us quickly unload the van.   The energetic, loving group touched me so deeply that I feel to my knees in tears.   I had never felt more welcomed or at home ever before.   I felt that this was what I had so fervently looked for as I traveled to different spiritual ashrams around the world, seeking guidance & purpose, a place to serve.   During the next couple of weeks, I realized that my first impression was only a hint of the deep connections & wonderful celebrations that we would experience toge...
